Starving Artists

Most people see tattoos simply as art on the skin, but behind every design is an entrepreneur balancing creativity, risk, and the realities of running a business. For many artists, tattooing offers what some call a “rock n’ roll lifestyle,” but only for those who have the courage to pursue their passion. Like any self-owned business, it requires jumping in despite the risks and working tirelessly for the best possible outcome.
Being both an artist and a business owner is not always an easy balance. Creativity and entrepreneurship must coexist, and success depends on dedication to both. For Erin Pearson, owner of Black Harbor Tattoo, that dedication is clear in everything he does.
“Pearson left his former shop and began building Black Harbor Tattoo with the goal of creating a more welcoming and creative space.”
Black Harbor Tattoo began with Pearson’s long journey in the industry. He spent nearly ten years apprenticing and working at another tattoo shop, learning the craft and building his skills. Over time, however, he realized he wanted more freedom with his art and his career. Instead of working under someone else, Pearson decided to take the leap and open a shop of his own.
Pearson also saw challenges within the industry. In some shops, competition between artists can create an environment where people feel discouraged or pressured rather than supported. Wanting something different, Pearson left his former shop and began building Black Harbor Tattoo with the goal of creating a more welcoming and creative space.
Because of the reputation he built over the years, Pearson already had a loyal clientele when he opened the shop. Today, Black Harbor Tattoo is filled with the steady buzzing of tattoo machines and a welcoming, judgment-free environment. Framed artwork lines the walls, showcasing the styles and creative journeys of the artists who work there.
Although the shop has an old-school atmosphere and still benefits from “word on the street” referrals, social media has become an important tool for reaching new clients. The artists promote their work through both a shared shop page and their individual accounts, allowing them to showcase their unique styles while helping the business grow. In today’s world, this online presence has become an essential part of maintaining a successful business.
One of the shop’s longtime artists, Shane Vanzant, shares Pearson’s passion for tattooing. Vanzant says he was inspired to follow Pearson wherever he went. For the first year, it was just the two of them working together and enjoying the freedom that comes with building something of their own.
For Vanzant, tattooing is far more than a job. It is a way to express himself and connect with others. “Art comes from… for me, my soul,” he explained
At the same time, tattooing is also about people. “I am addicted to art, but I am addicted to people,” Vanzant said. Every tattoo represents a story, a memory, or a moment in someone’s life, and being part of that experience is what keeps him passionate about the craft.
Being successful is having a purpose,” Vanzant said. At Black Harbor Tattoo, that purpose is clear. The artists there continue to create, connect with clients, and pursue their passion every day—proving that for some entrepreneurs, success truly is more than skin deep.
