Dirk Roper

Continuing a Legacy of Service

By Piper Jensick

Dirk Roper is continuing a legacy of service, strengthening the community while leading one of Carson City’s most trusted local businesses. Through his leadership of Roper’s Heating and Air Conditioning, he has not only helped keep homes comfortable but has also shown how deeply a local business can support the people around it.

Originally, the heating and air conditioning industry did not seem like the path Dirk Roper would follow. As a computer science major who spent decades working in computer consulting, he built a successful career in the technology and financial sectors, eventually becoming a certified financial planner. Meanwhile, his father had spent more than 70 years working in heating and air conditioning and had founded Roper’s Heating and Air Conditioning in Carson City in 1964.

In 2005, however, circumstances brought Roper back to the family business. After a period of unemployment, his parents asked if he could help them rebuild the company. The business had faced serious challenges after being sold in the 1990s, when the new owner eventually declared bankruptcy.

As Roper stepped in to help restore the company, he discovered that the work involved far more than simply replacing parts or installing heaters. The complexity of the systems, the problem-solving involved, and the opportunity to help customers drew him in. In 2011, he officially purchased the company from his parents and took over ownership.

Under Roper’s leadership, the business has grown steadily. Today, Roper’s Heating and Air Conditioning employs more than 14 people in the office alone, along with a large team of technicians working throughout the community. While Roper still oversees important projects, he has trusted leadership helping manage daily operations, which allows him and his wife to spend time traveling when they can.

Despite the growth of the company, Roper has remained deeply committed to serving the Carson City community. Roper’s Heating and Air Conditioning has long participated in the local fan drive that provides fans to senior citizens during the summer heat. His dedication to the effort even earned him recognition and an award from the city. The company has also supported Safe Grad celebrations for local students, contributed to the Carson City pool’s Easter Egg Hunt, and participated in various community drives, including donating coats to people in need.

“The community has been really good to us,” Roper says. “So we try to do our best to give back.”

Rebuilding the company after bankruptcy required more than simply reopening the doors. It meant restoring trust with customers who had long associated the business with Roper’s father, a widely respected figure in the industry. Roper felt a strong responsibility to uphold that reputation and continue the standard his father had set.

The industry itself had also changed dramatically. While his father had mastered older heating and cooling systems, the introduction of circuit boards and modern technologies reshaped the field. Roper recognized that embracing these innovations was essential to serving customers well. By focusing on new technology, efficiency, and sustainability, he ensured that the company could continue providing the best solutions for modern homes.

What truly sets Roper’s Heating and Air Conditioning apart is its commitment to treating customers with honesty and respect. Roper emphasizes that every technician represents the company in someone’s home, and they are expected to treat both the customer and the property with care. The job is not finished until the customer is satisfied.

He also believes that simply being the cheapest option is not the best way to serve customers. Cutting prices often means cutting corners, which can lead to poor workmanship and long-term problems. Instead, Roper focuses on fair pricing and high-quality work so customers know the job has been done correctly.

That philosophy extends to how he trains his employees. When new technicians join the company, Roper makes his expectations clear: integrity is non-negotiable. If an employee intentionally cheats a customer, they will be dismissed immediately, with no second chances.

For Roper, the guiding principle behind his work is simple. “It comes down to trying to do what’s right,” he says. “And you can do that in any industry there is.”

Through honesty, community involvement, and a commitment to quality, Dirk Roper has carried forward his family’s legacy—ensuring that Roper’s Heating and Air Conditioning continues to serve Carson City with both professionalism and heart.
